Ronald Reagan First Inaugural Address
|
He uses metaphor to express his feeling. He compares four-year-ceremony to miracle. He thinks being elected President is a miracle. Reagan is praising Jimmy Carter, and people who supported him. Reagan thanks for these people for stabilizing the country. I like how Reagan is crafting his speech so far however I believe if he used more rhetoric the speech would be more persuasive. Ronald Reagan was praising past president, Jimmy Carter, and now Reagan is pointing out what previous presidents, especially Jimmy Carter, was not productive but held U.S. down. So far, Reagan's rhetoric seems effective but in my opinion it is not as effectives as JFK's rhetoric. Reagan thinks welfare system is not a fair system, but hurting citizens that actually works, and helps the economy. In the end, welfare system will bring economic corruption. "Why then should we think that collectively, as a nation, we are not bound by that same limitation?" This is a rhetorical question If America does not reform the system, the country will fall eventually. It might not happen suddenly, but in the long run, America will fall. He thinks America has ability to make evolutionary reformation. Since this is inaugural address, presidents say they have ability to fix the problems, some of them just fails, actually most of them. He believes American government did not solve these economic problems, but creating problems, due to lack of capability. People believes they are the top elite group, but they are not. "But if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else?" This is rhetorical question that relates to his opinion, governors are not doing right. I wonder how the American people responded to this paragraph? because I'm not really feeling the sense of urgency but since the time is different people during the 80s could've responded differently. He wants support from Americans. He thinks people who actually owns the place should be part of this reformation. He wants to feedback people not only from government, or "elite group." He uses pathos, so people can cooperate with Reagan. I wonder if the use of pathos was effective on the audience? I wonder if this held true... Reagan's methods of helping America were not that effective. Reagan believes, in this way, everybody will do their job, economy will starts to grow, and we will be stronger and better living country. Theoretically, this is possible, and easy, but many presidents even failed first process, give out jobs. The speech seems very encouraging and strong so far. He believe this will make us live much better, and will smooth process. Reagan is saying since the people is the boss of the government and governors are workers, governors should show progress and growth based on what they did. He is is simply saying that he will reduce power of Federal government, and increase power of states, and individual citizens. He believes this will balance power between federal government and state governments. He is point is that without people, there will not be a country. For this reason, he is promising people to govern the country way the people wants. He also demands respects toward the government. If people abuse the power, government cannot do what they are supposed to do, governing the country. He believes it has to be balanced, and work out together, instead one group control over other. He believes this will be more efficient way. I wonder if citizens have jumped on Reagan's agenda and if they are encouraged to be on board with his beliefs and ideas. He tells the people that freedom is not granted as granite, but people believes it is granted as granite. He points out the problem that, since people takes it as granite, people choose not to work to keep it. Because of reasons above, the government get to have more control of the country, but in negative way. He wants people to have higher goals and work for it. He also wants people to think outside the box. He believes America has capability of having high goals and work out a way to achieve it. If we just sit down and do not change ourselves, we will fall. He believes we need to make progresses. He believes the people have to be more hero, people need determination, courage, strength. He believes everybody is a hero, and are the people that are advancing America. He uses pathos to appeal to audience. He convinces that the people are heroes. Since people believes they are hero of the country, they will work as hard as they could. He points out people "whose taxes support the Government." He points out people who actually works. He rewards people who do hard works, but also saying people who gets welfare, or does not work, does not deserve to be a hero. Like always, when president makes inaugural speech, presidents call citizens hero. He wants people to support him, and he will payback with better country. The use of rhetoric in this paragraph is very good and it really does make readers think about what he is saying. Did the audience answer these rhetorical questions? How did they respond? "How can we love our country and not love our countrymen -- and loving them reach out a hand when they fall, heal them when they’re sick, and provide opportunity to make them self-sufficient so they will be equal in fact and not just in theory? Can we solve the problems confronting us?" This is a rhetorical question. He believes this is one reason why America is struggling. He believes he can fix problems America is currently having. He tells people that he will clear out the problems America currently has. It will not be grow our fast at this progress, either this clearing process could be slow However, he promises that America will progress, therefore he wants people to be patient. He uses quote from Dr. Joseph Warren. America is struggling, however it is not too late and can be fixed at this point. If America reforms and progress to a better country, America will be the super power. In this time period, other super power was Soviet Union. He uses this rivalry feelings between Soviet Union to persuade people to work. He wants Americans to unite and work for goals. He will do everything to for freedom, and if there are any communists that tries to threat America, he will do everything to beat them. He wants people to prepare for any attacks that will threat America. He indirectly says that he will make America to have strong military with many nuclear weapons. This clears that he is Christian, and he wants God to support him. (JFK was only president that was not Christian, he was Catholic) He signifies the importance of the place. It is first in West Front of the Capitol to held inaugural speeches. He praises Washington D.C. and previous presidents, he is showing respects. He shows the love of his country, America. Again, he shows respect and patriotism towards the country. This shows that he has patriotism, to prove people he can be a president. Belleau Wood, Argonne is a name of a battle during WWI, that become key component in the WWI. Omaha Beach is a code name for D-day during WWII. Salerno, Guadalcanal, and Tarawa are another important battles in WWII. Pork Chop Hill, and Chosin Reservoir are battles during Korean War. He shows respect to veterans who have sacrificed their life. He uses a specific person's experience, which is anecdote. Martin Treptow believes America will win the war, because soldiers are willing to sacrifice for the country. This is another pathos, because this anecdote appeals the audience. He does not want everybody to join military and sacrifice, but he wants people to have those minds. Like all the presidents, since he is christian, he believes God will help America and Americans. I believe it is safe to say Reagan's speech was very good and used rhetoric well. I still personally believe that JFK's speech was more effective because of the constant use of rhetoric This is also other pathos. Since we are Americans, he believes people are capable of doing it, and this will appeal to audience, and they will recognize they can help the country, and they are the hero. This is an amazing use of pathos that I believe encouraged citizens to be on board with his agenda. |
