John F. Kennedy was elected in 1960. In this speech, John F. Kennedy is being sworn into the position of the president. Reverend Definition: used as a title or form of address to members of the clergy. From what I can see now, I think the point of this speech is to tell or explain to citizens the work that he will do and to explain his intentions to the people of the U.S.A. Is it appropriate for a president to talk about God in his speech? JFK is talking about nuclear power. JFK believes that freedom is a gift from God himself and we the people have the power to make this world into a better place. Wants audience to remember why they and America are here and reminds this audience what America was founded on. Which was reminded Americans that they live in the greatest country in world. In this paragraph JFK is using pathos to stir up emotions of nationalism in his audience. JFK repeats a similar grammatical structure that evokes a readers attentions(Parallelism) By talking about America in a good way his audience would be rilled up to here and accept what he wants to do. The United Divided reference is a rhetoric strategy used by many of America's political leaders. In this paragraph, JFK seems to be using parallelism to emphasize to the people that the U.S. will not perish and will go through virtually anything to assure the success of liberty. A hello from JFK to the new democratic countries of the world. JFK wants countries to take pride in their freedom and that they appreciate their independence. JFK used a metaphor that compared a bond to mass misery which helped him explain to his audience that being bonded is like being in misery. This eventually helped him stir up the emotions of his audience(he used pathos) which persuaded his american audience to agree with the president's agenda/intentions for America. JFK used pathos in this paragraph so his audience will be okay with his plan of helping other countries in need of help. Kennedy wants to create a rapport in areas that are poor and wants to spread democracy because he pledged to help the the countries that need help in the speech Uses anaphora/parallelism in this paragraph to emphasize that America will help where help is needed. JFK wanted to establish economic cooperation between North and South America Does he want to reestablish relationships for financial gain? In this metaphor, JFK compared the American's governments control over their country to a master of a house. Which appeals to the senses of listeners, sharpening their thoughts to comprehend what is being said. Metaphor comparing chains to poverty which is used so citizens can understand how horrible poverty is. Also uses Parallelism to emphasize that America will continue to live on their land and will not back down to anyone. JFK is basically telling the world in this paragraph that the great country he is now running will not be put down by anyone and that he will fight alongside with all of America to defeat and threat that opposes them. JFK is saying to his audience that creating a rapport anywhere is difficult, and they need to prevent war and turmoil in the world, so we need to strengthen our instruments of peace. Is Kennedy asking the United Nations to make resolutions preventing a nuclear war. Invective means insulting, abusive, or highly critical language. Also, JFK compares the U.S.'s pledge of support to a forum for invective. adversary: one's opponent in a contest, conflict, or dispute. Is the United States adversary the USSR? When JFK talks about being engulfed in accidental self-destruction, is he talking about nuclear destruction? So far, JFK is doing a great job of getting his people support for the coming times and outlining his agenda. JFK is saying in this paragraph, that we should never negotiate out of fear meaning that we should never negotiate because we are scared, but we should never negotiation In the next few paragraphs JFK seems to be talking about that the two opposing parties should work together and explore what makes them unite. JFK is using parallelism when he says " let both sides...". By doing this, he can emphasize that both sides need to work together to solve the problems in the world. Are the two sides JFK are talking about are democrats and republicans? Are the two sides JFK is talking about are Communism(USSR) and Democracy(USA)? When JFK talks about all the good outcomes of the two sides working together, it stirs up good and optimistic emotions in the listeners head. The text stirs of feelings of optimism in listeners which allows JFK to persuade citizens to work with the other side. In the paragraphs JFK attempts at using pathos to persuade citizens that in order to have a better world we will have to work together with the other side. Heed: pay attention to; take notice of. It is a paradox when JFK says, "Let both sides unite to heed, in all corners of the earth." Because the earth does not have corners because it is round. JFK is saying this because he wants to emphasize the point that these countries should work together to make the world a better place. Endeavor: try hard to achieve something Throughout the last few paragraphs, JFK is making the point the only way to make a better world is that if we work together on the other side. By doing this, we will ensure peace and stability in the world. JFK is using parallelism again to emphasize the point, that, even though, to achieve a rapport it may take an unknown amount of time we should start now so we can achieve a better future. In this paragraph JFK uses parallelism to rile citizens up and remind them that they are being called to fight for a better world and to join the united states and the world to make the world a better place. embattled: (of a place or people) involved in or prepared for war, especially because surrounded by enemy forces. By using parallelism, JFK was able to create a tool of persuasion to influence citizens to trust in him and his agenda. These are rhetorical questions. JFK asked these questions to listeners so he can lay the emphasis on working together to achieve a better world. JFK uses parallelism in this sentence so he can create a balanced flow of ideas and uses it as a tool of persuasion to influence Americans to go out and make the America a better place. After reading the majority of the speech, I can conclude the main purpose of this speech was to create a sense of security and a nationalistic feelings in America which assured Americans of their nations power and strength. |
